Street art of Valparaiso
I have just returned from Chile, where I spent most of my two weeks in enclosed spaces looking at the ocean. A wondrous view of the vast Pacific, amplified sonically by the sounds of waves crashing, at times a little too close to my plate of pizza.
We trekked out to Valparaiso, a mere 20 minutes away from Vina del Mar, for a day’s outing to museums. But it was not until the last day that I was treated to the full glory of Valpo street art. What a fantastic haven of creativity and spirit. Restaurants were perched on a hill overlooking the city, sea, and stars. Breathtaking.
Let me share with you some of my favorite corners of Chile’s capital for graffiti and mural art. Say what you want about street art - I love it.
This mural below was at the start of our tour, at the top of the hill. It is by a couple, of themselves. Hope they are still together!
There are lots of different styles of art on Valpo’s streets - that is among its charms. The main commonality is the spirit of the works, and the vitality it inspires. Just look at my friend Yasmin.
This below is part of a huge mural that spanned almost the entire block. Our tour guide explained its political context but strangely advised us to not discuss politics with Chileans, who will blithely comment about the ‘dictator’ and then stop talking. Slightly unnerving. Perhaps the Pinochet years remain very raw. I liked this part of the mural because it depicts stupid tourists like me.
Of course there is Frida. There is always Frida.
This last photo gives you a real sense of street art in Valpo - it is just part of everyday life. The woman ringing the doorbell here is likely thinking, Whatevs tourist, take your photo and move on. Never mind the technicolor rainbow tropical paradise before me. Never mind that.
I took these while on a Valparaiso walking tour which meets in the main square by the port, across from what else but a Starbucks! Overall Chile is a wonder. Time to update your bucket list!
